Promises or jobs?

The low number of Hungarians of working age who are officially employed is one of the most serious problems facing the Hungarian economy.

Almost a million jobs were lost in the early 1990s that have not been replaced in the intervening time, and creating new jobs has, sadly, not proven to be a priority of any national government since.

The country’s politicians know that Hungarian workers are competing against not only their Polish and Czech counterparts, but also low-wage Slovak, Romanian and Bulgarian workers. They see that the personal income taxes and social security contributions that these people are not paying are sorely missed from the government’s budget. And they must have read in public opinion surveys that one of the worst fears people have is of losing their job, and not being able to find another one soon, if at all.

At the moment, however, the most strident opposition to any change is coming from the left wing of the Socialist Party – i.e. the influential heads of trade unions steering government and public opinion alike toward the land of handouts and unrealistic promises.

That being said, all members of government – assuming they actually have the best interests of Hungary’s citizens in mind – would be wise to turn their ears away from populist rhetoric of all varieties and actually attempt to engage in fruitful dialogue with those they purport to represent.

Presuming such a dialogue could ever take place, politicians might well learn that the vast majority of people would hold in higher regard any government that would establish as its top priority the task of ensuring that as many people as possible can secure legal and gainful employment. MPs might even be shocked to discover that people in such conditions would willingly – perhaps happily – pay their fair share of social security contributions, without relying on government-subsidized intervention, and without being pressured or encouraged to seek work within the shadow economy.

Such a development would, in turn, ease the social security burden for employers – which would, in turn, make it less expensive for companies to take on more workers.

Of course, the real crunch issue in a dream scenario such as this is that there would be no forthcoming rise in the minimum wage – an issue that tends to sway people emotionally rather than sensibly. Also, a number of small and medium-sized businesses that rely on government guarantees and loans would certainly fall by the wayside.

These are not losses greatly to be mourned, however. Because today’s happily employed would likely bring us companies appreciated tomorrow for their high standards, viable business models, quality goods and services, and sparks of ingenuity.

Adriatic Challenge offers a delicious piece of cake from each parts of the whole sailing cake; they focus on the three main segments of yachting: regatta organizing, corporate sailing and charters.
